[CHICKENS-101] Re: Skinny hens...update..

Marla- thank you for your reply.... I am afraid that you might be right about my three smallest hens. The place that I got them from wasn't horrible, but they WERE a bit overcrowded, and different ages were mixed in the same pen. The three that I worry the most about are my two splash Orps and one blue. But, hey, they are eating, playing, dust bathing and generally being happy hens, so who cares if they are a little scruffy? :) the other two I got at th same time from the same place are lovely!

Their systems had to have been in bad shape possibly stunted or permanently damaged. I learned the hard way about buying bucket calves from bad conditions. I now have year old calves that are no where near butcher size/weight and never will be. Their systems can't handle grain or they get scours. They eat grass and hay only and do fine. You may find similar stomach problems with your hens. Unclean conditions when young can set up a whole host of problems for life. I hope you are lucky and can get them straightened up quickly.
