Young birds are dopey but they'll get the routine down eventually, just be persistent in your herding. Pain in the arse but it doesn't last too long before they understand the wisdom of coming in at night. Sometimes, by seeing their comrades 'disappear' in a most unpleasant fashion, helps them to get the idea that there's 'no place like home' ;)
BTW...I release my birds for free range at about 8 weeks of age, they're not quite so dopey and do better with returning for lock up at night.
