I agree that my free range chickens seem about as happy as a chicken can be. I would make sure that they have a safe place to roost at night, which will help keep your loses to a minimum. Also, a fence is important to keep your neighbors dogs and four legged wildlife out. I figure if I occasionally loose a chicken to a hawk or eagle, it is usually worth getting a good sighting of these magnificent birds. I don't know if I'm the only one, but I never loose a rooster to a hawk, it is always a hen, especially if she has chicks. I've often wished a hawk would take a few of my extra roosters at the end of summer.
