Hi Linda,
Flies have been a huge problem in various parts of the country the past 2 years. We moved here to Alabama from Roswell, New Mexico and last summer flies in Roswell were HORRIBLE. After I left, the end of May, they became even worse and friends said you couldn't go outside anywhere without being bitten numerous times.
I'm on a list with a lot of women from various locations and last summer everyone was saying the same thing - flies everywhere. Now they may have invaded or migrated to your area.
I remember how difficult it was but really feel it has nothing to do with your levels of cleanliness. If you can get a number of those bait bags you put water into and hang them 20 feet away from where the chickens are that might be the best you can hope for this summer. As unpleasant as that is to think about.

I spent all morning giving my chicken coop a good cleaning. I used a power washer to get all the nooks and crannies and have closed the door so it can dry out before my little friends go back in. The problem is that the flies are just as bad as before I cleaned it. I have 2 roosters and 14 hens of various breeds that are about 1 year old and 1 chick a month old and 9 that are 2 weeks old. My coop use to be a pool barn that we put a door on and chicken wire all the way around. There is an area about 20X16 that has tin on the roof and about that much that just has chicken wire on the top and sides. We have hog wire all the way around on the ground so critters can't dig in. Inside this incloser, we have what was once rabbit gages that I use to but the nesting boxes in and get the chicks in. This has tin on the roof of it. The chickens roost above this on a couple of 2X4 that my husband put up. I spray of this tin almost everyday so that the droppings don't build up. In spite of this flies are everywhere. Last year we had some flies but this year they are TERRIBLE. There are so many that you can hear them. The ground is just dirt so I realize that when I wash off the roof that the poop just goes to the ground but it wasn't a problem last year. Is there something that is safe to use around the chickens? Has anyone else had more trouble this year? I really need some help.
