Whenever we have "lots" of tent caterpillars, we also have "lots" of large black flies. Last year we had "lots" of tent caterpillars, this year we have "LOTS" of tent caterpillars. More, and larger, tents than I have ever seen in my life (I was a cabin boy on the ark when Ol' George was the Boatswain's Mate.) So, we also have "LOTS of large flies."
I sit on my porch killing flies, and the chickens come later and clean them up.

After I left, the end of May, they became even worse and friends said you couldn't go outside anywhere without being bitten numerous times.

If you can get a number of those bait bags you put water into and hang them 20 feet away from where the chickens are that might be the best you can hope for this summer. As unpleasant as that is to think about.
