Re: [CHICKENS-101] interesting chicken story

You had a very busy day!  Tarting up a pot sounds like fun!  Are you painting them various colors?

We got up at noon too!  Monday and Tuesday are my hubby's weekend days.  We usually are up at 11:30 so only slept in an extra half hour.  He leaves for work at 1 pm and gets home at 11:15 pm, then we eat dinner at midnight!  When I worked I had to keep my own schedule, but now my wake/sleep pattern is the same as his.

So my little chicks still in the house are up until midnight or 1 am, then I cover them up and they are under their quilt till 11:30 am the next morning.  Now that most of them went out to the yard today, they will probably suffer from 'jet lag' because they will be up with the sun.  Not tomorrow, because it was raining tonight and I yet once again covered them with a blanket for warmth.  Ordinarily it does not get chilly in the southern part of the US at night during the summer.  Only difference from day time is at night it's hot and dark!

Hi Georgia, glad to have kept you amused.lol. I have not got time for side issues, I am just about to go & have a quick 5  min chat with the girls then water the garden (Eat my chilli con carne?)
Then paint my next garden pot (project I've been working on for over a year now). A freind gave me 8 different concrete garden pots that I have slowly been tarting up.
As it was bank holiday today I had a real lye-in. Got the chooks up then went back to bed, darn it! slept til 12, can you believe it. Talk about waste of a day, never mind I still managed to get a couple of washes done & out on the line, & bleached my hair, cooked the kids fry up , cooked dh spag-bol. Ran ds to next town to see his buddies, so not bad going reckon I'll prob get to eat round about 930pm. Jane & Co.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Broody and Maybe Babies -Georgia - Inside

There is 'underwear' for chickens.  No kidding.  I will send you a photo and the email of the person who makes them.  Well, a number of people make them - they are called 'chicken diapers', but this woman has lower prices.  Seriously, would you pay $25.00 for a pair of undies for your chicken?  Me either!

As for the little chicks, I have 2 of the Chick-n-Hutch cages from Ware Mfr. available through Tractor Supply.  They are up on legs, have a slanted roof, wood back and wire sides and front. Powder coated wire floor and a catch tray.   There's a door in the wire front, but I just open the roof and reach down.  When I'd open the wire door chicks would leap onto my arm the moment I stuck it in.  It takes about 20 minutes to put one together!  Very easy.

Having a chicken in the house is wonderful.  We had a grown Polish that roamed our kitchen and dining room, but I didn't have the 'unders' then, and was constantly cleaning up after her with baby wipes.  It takes 2 wipes.  First to pick up the output, second one to make sure there is nothing left behind.  She slept in a box at night with a cover on it and would go into the box to lay her egg.  Except the day she laid it on top of the stove, 3 inches from a skillet.   She would fly up onto the counter and sit there, watching what was going on in the kitchen.

I kept a large flat heavy bowl on the floor for her food, and a crock for her water.  She sang all day long and I loved having her in the house.  She would sit on my hubby's knee and watch the news with him.    It was great!

Any more questions about this, just ask.

Georgia

And how do you have chickens inside? Whats the setup? Are they caged? I
have a couple of favorites that I would love indoors but all they seem
to do is eat and poop! I had my babies in the closet for awhile until
they become heat/cold tolerant, then moved them outdoors.

[CHICKENS-101] Chicken with sore vent...what do I do?

Hi all,
I have two hens (mostly brown with a bit of white on them, probably just common old British layers) a year old approx.
One of them has a red area just above her vent, where the first row of feathers come through. Not sure what I should do to help her?
Their coop has had louse and mite powder sprinkled on the bedding. The other hen seems fine. The affected hen takes more dust baths than her friend when they are allowed to roam the garden.
Also, I have had a few days recently with only one egg - not sure if it is normal resting period or something to do with the problem?
Grateful for any advice you can offer!
Thanks in advance
Jenny (and Betty hen!)
P.S. I've only had them for a couple of weeks so new to all this :-/

Re: [CHICKENS-101] chicken stuck in food container......

We use that same feeder. It is meant to be suspended above the ground by a rope, wire, chain, etc. We use chain scrounged from one of those cheapo steel swingsets someone was throwing away. The feeder manufacturer makes a plastic cover that keeps chickens from trying to perch on top of the feeder. I got mine from Meyer Hatchery one day when I was there because I was tired of chicken $#!+ in the feed. You slide the chain up through the cover and the cover just rests on the top bump in the handle. Other manufacturers offer a galvanized steel cover that does the same thing or you can easily make one out of a Frisbee by drilling a hole big enough for the chain to pass through. The cover is intended to flop around if a chicken tries to perch on it. To refill with feed you just slide the cover up the chain.

YIKES!  Went to feed and water my RIR chickens this morning and one was stuck head first in a food container!  Not sure how long she was stuck in there, but she couldn't turn around or figure out how to back out of the container.  I took the container apart and she came right out.  She seemed a little stressed out and very thirsty.  Here's some pictures from earlier......

Thank you, thank you, Jenny!     I have to go to Dollar Tree anyway for those red light bulbs.  Adding frisbies to my list.

You could make a lid out of a frisbee. You could slit the sides for the handle to go through.

Seeings as how it's a RIR, I'm surprised 'someone' hasn't said it was probably in the midst of CHEWING its way out through the side of the plastic.  Maybe 'someone' is still out BBQing................

LOL must have a sense of humor seeing a chicken butt sticking out of a feeder :-) I think she is trying to tell you she was hungry and was looking for food :-)

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Georgia --> re: chicken stuck in food container......

As much as feed stores charge for those little pieces of red plastic, we could make a fortune if we divised one.  Needs to fit over the top and accomodate that wire bail handle!

LOL, what this list needs is an accomplished plastic extruder!

Thanks Georgia.  These food containers definitely need some type of lid.
