Re: [CHICKENS-101] Oxalates and Nitrates

Mine won't touch the small tender stinging nettle plants, I have to weed them out of the pen.  I am not sure how they get in the pen unless seeds from many years ago are in the soil and turned up from tilling.  Thanks to Jane I have a couple of bags of clean wood ashes for my pens for tilling with the lime and sulfur.  Cath

Does anyone know whether chickens are particulary sensitive to these qualities in plants? I was trying to find out whether it was safe to feed stinging nettles (urtica something-or- other) to my chickens and found that they shouldn't have beets and sorrel because of oxalates and nitrates, but it didn't list spinach which has nitrates. I didn't look at everything on the list, but it did start me to wondering. Thanks!
