No rooster is needed and to my knowledge bloodspots in eggs have nothing to do with roosters. Since our hens are totally free-ranging on pasture we always have a rooster - a good rooster will warn the flock of danger - in our case he is always on the look-out for hawks. If a chicken gets into trouble - gets stuck somewhere or ranges too far afield he will also sound an alarm.
