So sorry to hear about your loss of chicks from McMurray. Im hearing this all over unfortunately and its gonna get worse as the weather gets hotter.
I ordered 27 chicks, half polish and half houdan, and they came all dead except for 2. Some were gasping and I was able to get some sterile saline under their skin and a couple even got up and walked around, but they were too stressed and died that night.
When I called I was told that they would replace the chicks and I said good, could they ship them out right away vua express mail? It was a tuesday so I figured I would get them in the next day or so....but no! apparently the post office has decided that McMurray ship on saturdays; I dont know when this happened but it is pretty new in that people have told me that they got shipments from McMurray a few years back and theyshipped via express mail during the week,. so they now hatch on thursdays and fridays for saturday shipping. the post office wont send packages by express on a saturday, of course, so they send their chicks via priority mail.
well, my chicks (vaccinated too by the way) hatched on a thursday, shipped on saturday, and arrived here tuesday AM 98% dead.
I have heard people in the past talk about how mcmurray's stock is a little inbred and how you see alot of crossed beak and the like from them, but Ive always been fascinated by their breeds and Ive always figured that they know what they are doing, being one ot the biggest hatcheries in the country.
well, this deal with the post office will probably be the end of them as far as the chick business; its the end of me ordering from them, thats for sure. I guess that their bulk during the week was too much. But if that wrecks their business...I dont know what to think.
Anyway, one of the 2 houdans that survived ended up with a bad crossed beak and I had her inside, feeding her, but it was so bad that she couldnt eat enough to live and she was half the size of the other one...and she died last night...poor thing.
Its a horrible thing to go through this. I suggest www.mypetchicken.com and if you use any hatchery, ask them details about their shipping.
