We had a hatch of 6 little ducks imprint on our dog when I was a kid. Embarrassed the heck out of the dog, being followed around by a little line of ducks, but he put up with it and let them sleep with him at night. We also had a black chow that would lie out in the yard in the springtime and let the wild birds swoop down and snatch up bits of his shedding coat for their nest building activities. This is unusual, though. Hearing stories like these does not imply that any other dog or cat will be trustworthy around poultry - or, for that matter, that your new little kitten will be safe from your grown hens.
An overabundance of caution in always a wise idea. We 'thought' the parakeet was safe in it's cage until one of my son's snakes somehow got in there and ate it. Funny, I miss my son desperately, but the reptiles and amphibians - not so much.
