[CHICKENS-101] Re: Chicken feed ain't cheap

Chickens are omnivorous. They can and do eat most things in the wild, getting a balance of green plants, fruit, seeds, bugs and small animals. In captivity they do best on a balanced diet of whole grains, animal protein and plant material like alfalfa meal or the like. They will thrive if allowed to graze on green grass for a while daily. A good 16% or 17% protein layer ration is a complete feed and chickens will do very well on it and nothing else for months at a time. And they can't be beaten for egg production.
