[CHICKENS-101] Re: Dust in Hatching and brooding room! What can be done?

I have the same problem, but I keep the chicks in my living room. I keep thinking that I need to move them to another room, but I love watching them. I also have my seramas in the living room and I would miss them if they were put somewhere out of sight. They make winter much more tolerable.

The problem is not necessarily the shavings. I buy premium pine shavings which are dust free for the chicks. My seramas are in a parrot cage over top of newspapers. The seramas are just as dusty as the chicks. I think it is just dander from the birds themselves that gets bad. When I had a cockatoo, my house would get completely covered in dust from the bird. He didn't have any bedding, just newspaper on the bottom of the cage like the seramas.

The chickens are meant to be living outdoors where the rain washes away their mess and dust. When we keep them confined in coops or indoors, it is going to get messy and dusty.

I've never tried an air filter. Some of the parrot breeders use them. The ones I saw on operating display once at a bird show seemed to produce a weird odor. I'm not sure if they all do, but it made me decide against buying one.

I'm looking forward to spring and getting the windows open again for some fresh air!
