Re: [CHICKENS-101] OT OT Introducing Lily page

Glad you like it. It is kinda hard when I don't have her her to get a drift of her actual personality. No, I'll be getting her this coming up weekend. She'll be 6 weeks old next Monday and the momma has stopped letting them nurse for the most part and tries to stay away from them..lol Their milk teeth hurt I suppose. We're all excited for them all to come. I will have a tri female started and for sale as well. We are getting puppy proofed..lol Amber's birthday is wednesday and she'll be 10 she's excited for her puppy too..lol oh, I'll be having 25 eggs hatching too..lol

Thanks,

Michele in WV

Michelle, I love your intro!  Then you put her name in PINK on her picture; I love it.  She'll be coming home to you soon, won't she?  About 3 weeks?  Lily is beautiful.  I love how her colors circle her baby blue eyes.
I think her collar, leash, life jacket, and woods coat color should pink.  What do you think?
Dixie Blue blue
, Florie orange, and Lily pink.  When they get their dog safety coats for tromping thru my woods with me, they'll have bright blaze coats in their color.
Rainbow dressed dogs, not only rainbowsilkies.
I'll have to start looking for fabric or something made in fluorescent blue and pink; blaze orange is easy to find.  I'm going to have to buy a king sized bed to have enough room for all 3 of my chicken guardian dogs and their blankets at the foot of my bed. Dixie is hogging half my bed right now and is plastered up against me. My seramas are looking at me, wishing I could hold more than one at time and type. :)  Cathryn

Cath and group,
Here's the introducing Lily page. It isn't hard to build Cath, I'm sittin on my hiney anyway...lol

Ok, I have the page done. She is not here yet so I have to wait until she's here to know more about her and get some 'in action' pics.. It will be updated regularly. I'm excited to see what her personality is going to be like. So, here's the page as it is right now but it will get better after she gets here.

Thanks,

Michele in WV

[CHICKENS-101] we are new with all this

me and my family have just recently joined the 4h group in st augustine fl. we have taken interest in the chicken group. we have 5 chickens. 3 of which are polish bantams. our red laced polish bantams have just started laying. they are a pair so we would like to start incubating them and hopefully growing our flock. i would like to know how to do this and how to make a homemade incubator for cheap. any help would be greatful. also we are looking for a white crested black polish cock. our cockerel passed in dec a week before christmas and he won my daughter grand champion of our fair and he left behind his mate. we would like to find one that is 8 months to a year old. we would like to mate him with our hen. any help would be thankful.

Hey Eric, If you do not mind, may I ask how tall are you?  Cathryn

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Back on line

Pete, What a great resource!  Downstate we have city water for the house and can run a hose to the barns if the power is out.
I keep a bit of bottled water for up north.  There is always the river for water if the power goes out.  I like the rain tank idea; I'd like to do the same.   We used to have a cistern and a dumb   skunk fell in it. Of course by the time we figured out where the horrible odor was coming from, it was too late to fish it out.  My husband filled in it, instead of putting a grate over it. (I could have shot him for doing it too.) Cathryn

We really don't use this water for drinking ...can use it for cooking but we would boil it first.  We have used it for bathing / showers and toilet.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] OT Back on line

They are shy of voices they don't know also.  Some more than others.  Amelia is just plain nosy, the rest run like the devil was after them.  Then some come and peek around the corner.  I don't know if a garment would send a message to them or not.

Some use a potty box, others go beside it, some choose a different spot.  This is why they live in 'their' house and not in mine any more.  They have 6 inches of hay and straw on the wood floor of their building. It's a 10X20 building.

The way it's going the cat is going to bite the dog!  I guess the people who raised her didn't curb biting but that's a no go with me.  She's been laying on my lap, taken a chomp on my hand or arm, I then SMACK her so hard it hurts when her jaw impacts my leg and she continues to lay there in my lap.  Does not get up and leave. Very strange cat.

We are going to PetSmart tomorrow and I think they sell cow bell looking bells as parrot toys.  I'm pretty sure I've seen them in the big pet stores.  If not, there's always Tractor Supply!

Georgia, I can't wait to meet them. Should I send you a hankie or something that I wore in a pocket so your skunkies can get used to me before I get there?  Or will they take a slow intro ok?  They have their own house and pen?  Do they use a litter box or do you pull their house/pen around?
My cat looks like the long haired Halloween Cat with her fur sticking out at all weird angles when she approaches Dixie.  Izzy does the same to Dixie, it is so funny.  Dixie was going to munch on Izzy for picking on her in the house, and growled and lunged at Izzy. I yelled at both.  Dixie almost had a heart attack and Izzy scooted back to the mudroom, both scrabbling off on the hardwood floors!
Ohh boyyy, it will be interesting out in the farm yard this spring.  Lily will have to teach them all how to get along.  It will be interesting to find out if Florida will put up with Izzy. You know you really are blessed even if it does not seem that way right now.  What would you do if your dog ate your cat like Janet's husband's dog did?  The cow bell on your cat is a good idea, at least your Petals could hear the cat coming at her. LOL! Cathryn

You are in for a snuggly treat.  Several of them are little love bugs.
It was pitch dark in their house, the lights are not coming on right.  I couldn't see their food bowl, nor them.  I finally gave up and set the plastic bowl of food on the floor and felt noses all over my arm, and fur.  Any skunk will bite when frightened, but I guess I smelled like "me".  Then I still had their fresh water bowl to put down.  Again, at least 2 noses and more fur sniffed me.

Our new dog is the biggest Wuss on the planet.  The cat chased her today, outside.  Visualize a dog going hell for leather after a cat.  Got the image?  Ok, now visualize the cat all fluffed up and thundering after the dog who is yelping and yipping and running away as fast as it can.  Scheesh, this is EMBARRASSING!    The cat knows the dog will run from her.  She chases Petals in the house too, but this is the first time I've seen her going full tilt after the poor dog outside.  I think I'll put a bell on the cat - a cow bell!

Georgia

tle skunks. I am so looking forward to June!! Cathryn

Pete that is really neat!  Do you can sanitize the water in your rain tank?   I'm not sure about creek water, but rainwater shouldn't have too many critters in it if is kept sanitized, or no need too?  Don't know much about it except 1 tablespoon of oxine disinfects 150 gallons of drinking water. You have a great set up. Cathryn

Mike, My Lily will squat any way. LOL! I think 15-16 weeks is a good age.  A resident/intern vet at my vet's clinic did microsugery on puppies and kittens.  My cat was fine as was the feral kitten I tamed for my mother in law; both were fixed at 9-10 weeks. Cathryn

Ci Bach was 6 months old when he had his "operation". I now believe that is way too early, he never learned to be a dog and not to squat to pee.
