I got my first flock, last April (7 buffs plus 1 rooster) I corralled a small area around the coop and kept them confined for about 3 days, placing their food in the same place. Mine where 7 weeks old when I got them, not sure how much that matters. After 3 days I opened the gate and they free ranged the entire property, about 1 and 1/2 acre. Each night when it started getting dark they were in the coop.
Good luck they are a lot of fun.

I wait 3 weeks to get my pullets to lay where I want them to lay, teach them their feed, oyster shell, and water is in their coop. If they are not laying yet I would not let them out until they have laid for at least 2 weeks in their nest boxes. Saves problems father on down the road when they know where to lay and bond with their coop.
