I have found with a small amount of tiny chickens that they need some 'bulk' of warmth around them for comfort. Quite often I have about 1-3 survivors of an ebay order, and I stick an older calm breed chick to be a 'sister' or babysitter. Twice this spring I was in that position, the first time I rushed to the farm store and got a clearance Orp chick - the second time an oops AmeraucanaXPolish filled the post Last year an OEG and a Silkie stepped forward at different times when little ones went to the backyard from the brooder. I hatched one Serama from a batch in a heat wave this summer what a drama princess she was - I was happy when she left last week with her best friend Ameraucana cockerel to a new home. It was so funny to see the Orp chick still hanging with the buddies when she was 10 times their size.

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] monster chicks advice
Yesterday I brought in the chick that hatched in my hand, and the little serama I decided was too small to go out to the baby barn. A couple of times I checked on them, and all was going great. Today did the same; even picked them up to look them over. Checked their light, clean water, food, they have each other, and a bit of exact lovebird food. Well guess what? I have a 1 day old chick and a 4 week old serama chick that will not stop yelling for me to hold them! I am typing with one hand as both are sitting in my lap in one hand. They have yelled and screamed for hours... I know as soon as I put them down they are going to go back to screaming. :( Any ideas? It's 12:02 and they have yelled since 8-8:30pm.
