Re: [CHICKENS-101] How far will chickens travel from coop?

They'll travel as far as they can until something stops them or it's time to go back home. Some you may have to go find if you let them roam the full 25. It may take them a while maybe even a couple years before they really start roaming but you never know. I've had buff orps stay on our 1 acre for years free ranging. Last year I got oegb as well. They roamed the block within a week of being let out into the open run. They flew over the fence and off they went to get in trouble at the neighbors. They haven't been allowed out of their covered run since.
Just remember games are a bit closer to their wild cousins. That can be great in some ways but a pain in others.
Are you going to offer them any predator protection in that wooded area, maybe in the way of a livestock guard dog? I think that's advisable
Best of luck

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] How far will chickens travel from coop?

Hi!

I've been reading the list for months to gain knowledge but this is my first post. My 20 chicks will be here in 2 weeks and everything is ready for them. I chose Old English Games. I have a 10 by 16 coop and a 10 by 10 attached dog kennel with a roof but they eventually will be offered free range. My property is 25 acres, heavily wooded. That much liberty stresses me a lot. I wonder how far chickens will travel from the coop?

Thank you!
Michele in New Hampshire
