50+ years ago when I was a little kid of 3-4 my next door neighbors, which were also my cousins had a backyard flock and they would butcher a few from time to time. Us little kids would find it very interesting to watch the chicken's heads being cut off. I remember to this day, one that was so "wild" with its head cut off that my uncle had to throw it into an adjacent field and go looking for it later. My uncle would sometimes give a dead chicken to my parents and I would watch as the entrails were removed. I think that this helped to kindle a lifelong interest in biology.
