I wouldn't kill it, snakes are beneficial predators, poisonous ones are just not desirable near humans and other animals. I am going to get a container so I can put a snake inside such a trap safely into my car and drive it out to release it in the wilderness. I am assuming there aren't that many snakes on my property, so I will only put out the trap when I know I have time the next morning to rehome a snake if needed.
I saw a snake recently catch and pull a good size lizard under one of my sheds, I didn't get a good look at the snake to determine if it was a rattler or a harmless snake, if it's a rattler I want it gone.
