[CHICKENS-101] Re: Rooster chasing my pullet

Mating/Breeding is what they are doing; Chickens; male, or female have no concept of rape; that is pretty much a human invention; all the Chickens, or any other animal is doing is acting on a preset drive to perpetuate their species... Once any female member of a any specific animal group starts producing the proper pheromones; the males within that community react as nature has programmed them to.... Rape has nothing to do with it....

A rooster gives a flock of hens confidence, a sense of protection, & being provided for (that's the interaction when the rooster finds food, or a fat juicy bug & clucks for his ladies to come eat it)..

While you do not need a rooster in your flock; the dominant hen will assume the role of rooster, & in most cases; will mount the subservient hens below her in the pecking order like she was a male...

So to use the terminology used below; the "Dominant "Hen" will commit "lesbian rape" to assert her dominance of the rest of the flock...

If you do not want a rooster or cockerel breeding a hen or pullet, pen the hen and/or pullet  or your cockerel/rooster separate. Birds have their own social system and the male bird breeding the female is part of it.  If the female does not like the male who bred her she can dump his sperm.

> Emily, you sound so much like my daughter. She's VERY close to her chickens, especially the hens and she can't stand seeing the hens "raped" by the roosters. We've gone through ALOT of roosters, until we found ones who were gentle and respectful to the hens. She has one village that's just hens, and no rooster at all. 6 sweet little Banty girls, SO cute and so beautiful...we call that village "The Girls Club". The hens don't need, and for the most part don't like roosters at all. I wouldn't let a rooster hurt the hens. Do you really need one?
