[CHICKENS-101] Three bantams in melbourne!

Well we are up to going out in a run now for a few hours and the three spoilt bantams of dubious names are enjoying chook aerobics. They run and dance and bounce! They have a large soil pile which they are working at rearranging and a mini hen obsticle course that they balance along.By 8.30 pm they are tired and tuck themselves into bed.I cannot keep up with the greens either.I think these girls are about 3 to 4 months old by now. They eat from your hand and follow you around but wont let me pick them up-That is okay. One hen started to squawk recently and did this alday-I thought she was sick!! She was finding her "cluck".

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: frostbite and now an infection?

That's okay, I'm on a delay too...I'm sure you've already done a search on it, but this is what mine look like:
http://www.backyardchickens.com/a/avian-pox-how-to-treat-your-chickens-for-avian-pox
...and this is frostbite:
http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/620593/chicken-frostbite-advice-needed

I'm seeing sort of a freezer-burn-type thing on the second link. Is this what you're seeing? I've been treating mine every day with neosporin (w/o any pain relief) ointment, just to be on the safe side---it won't help with the pox, but it might keep the lesions from getting infected. You probably don't have anything to worry about---the tips will just fall off on their own. You probably already know about coating the combs and wattles with vaseline when a really cold snap is expected. You can post pictures to the list so some of the more experienced chicken owners can take a look, maybe. Hope this helps a little!

Chrys

sorry about the delay in updating but my Yahoo account has been doing weird stuff since they upgraded a few days ago. the infection appears on the tips of his crest. I don't see any black stuff however the comb is discolored like it has freezer burn.

Michigan is getting it again with another storm! We had a breather to get to school yesterday and this morning after Monday and Tuesday's storms. Last night we had icy rain but the winds were so wild that they dried most of it up. Now it's an icy blizzard outside. Wish my parents had let me take off and drive them to my father's appointment. :(
To the person with the sick rooster - please check his droppings for worms and blood-(red, orange, pinkish). You can use a piece of paper and a toothpick to sort thru it. If yes to worms and or cocci, worm him and/or get him on cocci med. If no visible worm get him on a broad spectrum antibiotic asap. In either case, get him in a bird hospital situation with a light he can get under or away from for heat-inside, and on meds asap. By the time a chicken/bird acts sick they are usually close to death/in danger of dying. Miss everyone. If my husband doesn't hurry up and get our internet fixed, I am going to have to get my own again.

Staff,
Please be extra cautious as you travel the roads this afternoon. US 23 and I 75 are shut down in numerous areas as a result of multiple vehicle pile ups. Accidents are reported all over due to icy roadways and white out conditions.
Be Safe!!

Glad you are ok. I have been missing your posts and realized it had been a few days since you had posted anything. We are both on two groups together and I hadn't seen you post on either.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: frostbite and now an infection?

Hi Rebecca---I thought my chickens had frost bite also, but it was avian pox. It started out as a warty-looking black bump on his comb (not on the tips), and spread to the other chickens. Either way, if it's frost bite it should just fall off, and avian pox is just a virus that has to run it's course. Is it on the tips or on the actual body of the comb? Some of mine have the black stuff on the tips, but most of them also have it in the body of the comb and on the wattles.

Cathryn, glad to hear you're OK. Sorry to hear about the Internet
Withdrawal. Dan and I still have not gotten around to fixing my
desktop yet, as Dan has been going to the doctor and getting his health
taken care of and busy with other projects.

Hi Valerie, H messed up the internet at his tavern, then ATT messed it up some more. The free/low fee city service has been down because of weather.

We didn't have school again Monday and Tuesday this week because of snow and ice storms. Miss everyone and am going thru internet access withdraw. :0
