[CHICKENS-101] Re: Retraining to return to coop

They will eventually go in by themselves without the extra scratch, you are prob trying to get them in too early.
Just watch them tom, & if any are still out after dark  they will go so quiet & still you can just pick them up & put them on their perches, they will get the idea eventually. Keep an eye on them at dusk so no preditors can have a feast but don't try rounding them up. You could just save the scratch for half hour before dusk & sprinkle it on the floor near the coop so they are really close to home where they will then totter before it's too dark.
I read some where to feed the stuff like corn that takes a long time to digest at night because it gives them a full crop to go to bed on & digest throughout the night.
Also, you need to let them out of their coop a little earlier than you are, hens will go back to thier coop to lay eggs when they are ready, keeping them shut in till 12 will only make them desperate for freedom & not want to go back in their coop till they feel they have had enough day light & food. So that could be your prob solved. Let them out realier & they will go in earlier if you put the scratch round their coop at night to encourage them where to be when it's dark.
If you test it out let me know if it works? Cheers. Good luck with your girls. Jane & co
