Re: [CHICKENS-101] Waterer help

Do you have instructions or pictures? I am in the planning stages. Hubby is building me a coop in the Spring. Hopefully it will be done before the chickies jump out of the brooder.

[CHICKENS-101] Re: Egg hatching

Nobody has asked where you live and what the weather is or what breed of hen is sitting.... Your hen should be fine with no supplemental heat, after all she does have a down coat on .... It's terrible to be too hot especially if you can't move because you are sitting on eggs .... It also makes it seem colder to her when she goes outside... Many people who hatch eggs in incubators open the incubators and let the eggs cool for 15 mins a day... They think it makes the chick heartier .... my hen got confused and switched nests.... The good eggs were cold for 18ish hours and they hatched. When the chicks hatch they will stay under mama hen most of the first few days and then start to venture out.... How many eggs is she sitting on?? If she isn't brooding too many chicks she should be ok keeping them warm without extra help.....

Good luck

Amanda

I put the food and water within reach so she doesn't have to leave the nest. But this morning she left the nest and when I noticed it, the eggs were already cool to the touch. After a few minutes more, she came back to the nest and she is now sitting on the eggs again.

These drink cups

http://www.cutlersupply.com/cart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=11_60_135&products_id=489

Work well and cutler supply's price is really good compared to others on
e-bay, etc. for the same item.

They will screw securely into a pvc bucket or a piece of 4" PVC pipe is
you drill the right-sized hole.

My parents liked it because it was low in salt and my father is severely salt restricted. I'm glad he liked it because my chickens would have gotten all of it! I have carrots to steam for my chickens yet today. All of the tiny ones I picked up from the ground after they were dug.

As soon as I get the heat lamps up in the little coop house and calf house in the egg layer pen I I will get two large kitty litter crates fixed up where the chickens can't get into them but the kitten can. One for litter and the other for food and water and move Middy in or Thumbs.

NOpe, NM now has a season on them, they started it because they figured it'd be extra $.  TX is still open, and we do shoot when we see them, they'll kill and eat young baby calves.  And they tear up a ton, I just had to gather mini's in the dark because of yet another hole they tore in my fence! To the best of my knowledge, there is a year-round open season on wild
or feral hogs in most of the southern states and some northern ones.
California, of course, treats them as wild game, with licenses and
seasons, which is ridiculous when one is discussing a non-native,
invasive and
dangerous animal that is a threat to wilderness, wild animal
populations, crops and people.

In many places one can shoot them at will, and all over the country, any
hunting guide that is offering guided hunts or fishing trips is also
offering boar hunting, for low prices, because it is legal all year round.

The last National Geographic special I watched described them as a
plague on agriculture and an actual danger to people in 38 states, and
spreading fast.

Yep, I can give her a heat lamp to help keep them warm. How cold is too cold for the chicks? It gets into the 30's and 40's here at night. Soon, it will be much colder. Would it be best to bring the chicks inside to raise them until they are big enough to go back outside?

Usually I jump the gun and help the hen teach their chicks to eat and drink too.

[CHICKENS-101] Re: Extra light

I think all of my chickens are large pure breeds. Orpingtons, Marans, an Aracauna, a RIR and one that I think is an Americauna (she lays blue eggs just like the Aracauna)
Thier offspring will be mixed breeds since all of them run together with two roosters. Will these offspring have be likely to have trouble with being egg bound?

But they are prone to getting agg bound  (I have had this condition in 4 out of 8 hybrids). I will not chose these type of breeds again as I think it is not fair on them.Jane & co
