Re: [CHICKENS-101] Sick Hen :(

Kelly, You are a good and patient chicken mom. Can you trim her beak and put penetran on the sides, above, and below on the flesh?  With trimming and relaxation of the mucsles you may be able to straighten your chicken's cross beak up some. It depends on age for the amount of correction that occurs, but even a little bit is good.
If you have some where you can buy her small tiny pellets or cockatiel Exact, she should be able to pick up the little pellets. The colors may help motivate her to expend the energy to keep at eating. Eating is going to be much work for her as you well know.
When you trim her beak, whatch out for the quick and flesh inside her mouth.

We have a crossed beak that was starving because she could not peck on her
own and we started hard feeding her bugs with tweezers (be sure not to poke
her) medicated chick feed and putting electrolyte with vitamins packets
into the water for hydration and broccoli from the garden (once it flowers
and is spent for us, they love it!). Where she isn't eating, the chick feed
might be easy on her and if it's medicated, maybe it will help what is
ailing her. Also, Cathryn suggestions sound wonderful as well.
I hope she pulls threw,
Kelly

HI Scott, I would make up the sulfadimethoxine and hand feed her the water
with the med, with a spoon, in small amounts at a time. I'd also hand feed
her. She is very close to death and needs food in her. You can feed her
tiny bits of dog food, chicken feed mixed with yogurt or something else that
will make it stick together in small balls. If you feed pelleted feed, you
can feed her the pellets. Plan on this taking quite a bit of time and doing
it at least 3 times a day. In between feeding, offer her favorite chicken
foods, grains & dry oatmeal with a little bit of grit, boiled egg, water
melon, anything you can think of that will entice her to eat, line up the
dishes in front of her. I keep cockatiel Exact on hand because the bright
colors always tempt chickens to eat. Time is not on your side. There is a good
chance you can save her. If you have ivermectim, I would put two small drops
on her backside too.
