Some of the old farming/husbandry books are really great. Where the newer ones (until very recent years) were all based on animal confinement, petrochemicals, insecticides, etc., the old books have the much more sustainable methods that won't poison everything in sight. Of course you do have to put aside some old advice--medications and such that have been disproven or were useless--but they *had* to farm sustainably.
I saw somewhere recently that someone was going to be reprinting old farming handbooks... Wonder where I saw that. But anytime you're in an "old books" shop, check around under gardening or agriculture, and sometimes you find a nice old gem that gives you some good ideas.
