<<This skunk has my parents well trained and given them many chuckles!>>
I ran a 4-H Livestock Camp for years... We used to have to warn the kids to close their tack trunks in the barn, because the local skunks would come though searching for goodies left behind. I met Mephitis mephitis frequently in the evening--I think you'd have had to kick them to make them spray, although now that I think back a counselor's dog once chummily upended one who was investigating her feed bowl, and got well-stunk-up. One of the skunks did once wake me by bumbling around under my cot (I slept in the barn to keep an eye on the animals)--when I opened my eyes there was a shiny little black nose almost touching mine...
