Tried that the first year I had a barrel out, but maybe we have smaller mosquitoes here--or they are better at crawling around the edges--anyway, they still got in. I did find a great buy on eBay, though, for the Mosquito Dunks--got a "lot" of 100, I think, which should last me for years! A dunk broken into fourths takes care of 4 barrels, and lasts a month. (I have about 6 barrels lined up under the eaves at the back of the house--so with luck, I can last several weeks without rain--but I agree, it is much nicer not to *have* to!)
