If it's any comfort, today the treatment is not as bad as years ago however, it's still unpleasant and VERY expensive...can cost up to $1500.00 and not all insurance companies cover it.
Since rabies results in death, better safe than sorry though, eh?
I commend you on vaccinating your animals, especially your cats. If more people did this, we'd have less rabies reports in livestock and domestic animals.
Most wildlife rehabbers get vaccinated as do vets. In this case, if exposed, the treatment is much less involved.
