Re: [CHICKENS-101] Covered perches?

Ugh...never thought about the mite and lice thing! Also on the subject of perches - I have two Barred Rocks that seem to like ledges/shelves. I had one in their coop from previous use as a tack room ...is there any reason that I shouldn't add a few more? They are a bugger to clean but they seem to like to hunker down instead of perch like the rest. Also, I have a few that still prefer to cuddle together on the ground...is this normal in younger chickens, or does this indicate a problem with the perching??? I.E. - not enough, or not the right type??? I really want my girls to be comfortable and am worried that they aren't. :(

Perches should be rounded 2"x2" s by what ever length you want so their toes can curl around them comfortably. I just saw this when I was reading thru one of my files. I'll look it up again after school and my work is done today. I sealed mine when I had them with linseed oil. Made cleaning a breeze and sealed the wood.

Like Deb said, I would be afraid of carpet it would provide a ready made mite/louse home, and the birds could get their claws/nails tangled in it. Chickens are worse than an 18 month old turned out alone when it comes to getting in trouble or hurt.
