Carpet on the perches has a couple problems - mites for one as Deb says - also toes can get caught in the fiber loops and cause broken toes, shanks.
2 x 4's with the "4" inch side up is a good compromise for perch construction. This also provides protection for the feet and shanks as the abdominal feathers cover them when the bird 'squats'.
If you can find (or make) regular, old-time, whitewash coat the perches with it and many insect-parasite problems will be greatly reduced. Renew the whitewash every 6 months for continuing protection.
