Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Tractor supply and purebred chickens THERE IS A REASON

Debbie, if I were you, I'd go online to Craigslist and check the farm and garden section.  If you find someone advertising chicks for sale, send them an e-mail and ask how they raise them and what they feed them.  If no one is advertising chicks, post your own notice stating what you're looking for.  Or, do a google search on "organically grown" in your area and see what you come up with.  Or, go to the nearest farmer's market and ask around.  At least near me, many of the folks at the farmer's market do organic gardening/farming, and a lot of them sell fresh eggs, so they have chickens.

Best of luck!

Understand, I'm still really new to this, and still learning before I get chickens. All I really know about chickens is preparing them for the table.

Chicks you buy at TSC are for food only, and at the feed store they're also for production. One of the reasons I'm looking into this is my vast array of allergies. If these chickens are for production, meat and eggs, how are they fed? What kind of stock are they from? I don't want to get starter chicks only to find out they've been loaded with antibiotics and hormones and stuff like that.  (I'd find that out the hard, expensive way, too.) While it's still a little too early to buy any, when you're growing them for the reason I am, where would be the best sort of place to get chicks?

Debbie
