Understand, I'm still really new to this, and still learning before I get chickens. All I really know about chickens is preparing them for the table.
Chicks you buy at TSC are for food only, and at the feed store they're also for production. One of the reasons I'm looking into this is my vast array of allergies. If these chickens are for production, meat and eggs, how are they fed? What kind of stock are they from? I don't want to get starter chicks only to find out they've been loaded with antibiotics and hormones and stuff like that. (I'd find that out the hard, expensive way, too.) While it's still a little too early to buy any, when you're growing them for the reason I am, where would be the best sort of place to get chicks?
Debbie
Just a side note. TSC is a farmers store. Those chicks in tubs are intended for the production of FOOD only. The comets grow fast and butcher out nicely. And are egg machines too. The sex of the chicks does not matter when you are raising for meat. Hence the strait run being cheeper (pun intended).
The local feed and seed will have good tested, healthy, specific breeds in a wide variety, but these too are primarily for farmers that use them for production.
For collectible chickens (i've got a few) the only source for them is online vendors. Unless you are lucky enough to live in a "chicken rich location" LOL.
Just sayin'
