These two were not my only declawed cats. Before I became allergic, I always had indoor only cats and my cats were always declawed, all 4 paws. I had them fixed and declawed as young as possible. Microsurgery made it possible to fix them as kittens; spay/neuter and claws. I'm glad my cats did not know that declawed, fixed cats have problems because mine were fine. Maybe the amount of healthy food, play, and attention make a difference. Cath
Cathryn, you were very lucky that both your declawed cats had no behavior problems. Many declawed cats can't be around other cats; they become hyper-defensive and fearful. They frequently develop problems with urinating and/or defecating outside the litter box. Less frequently, but still more frequently than non-declawed cats, they become biters. I have seen these problems over and over again during my years of animal rescue.

My house cats were always declawed when my kids were growing up. All 4 feet. My cats were happy drinking their baba bottles, wearing doll dresses, being rocked in the doll bassinet, and playing house or GI Joe. Both cats over the years enjoyed being bathed and the resulting attentions. My kids had fun making hanging cat toys and playing drag the car with the kitty chasing. Our cats and dog, chased each other, skidding thru the rugs and hardwood floors in the hall and bedrooms.
When our cats were young and acted like they wanted to go outside, we took care of their curiosity by standing outside by the door and clanging pan lids together when they put their heads by the door opening. Our cats happily stayed inside away from doors, played with the dog and kids, and lived full happy, clawless lives. I really think it depends on the situation if a cat is declawed or not. My vet gave us kitty pain pills and ointment for our cats and our cats never acted like they were pain. My kids were not subjected to claws and my cats had a wonderful life of love and attention.
I'd never declaw my Izzy or any future cats that have jobs out of doors, they need theirs. Cathryn
And anything I have that makes noise will always be left noisy. Of course, I am rabidly anti declaw and docking, as well. Critters are as they are for a reason :)MargoPelzer, SC
