How long is your fish? Ducks eat slugs and snails but I don't know if they go after small fish. I know the fish eat baby ducks! Man it's a vicious world out there! I'm planning on having Indian Runners, but not until this time next year.
Ashes from a fireplace are good dust bath materials. My chickens seem to create their own depressions so it's an instinctive thing. Maybe lightly sprinkle the materials you want them to use in the places they make for themselves.

After digging out a load of earth in a sheltered area (with the girls helping, of course) and submerged the sand pit adding plenty of soil, but to no avail the girls still completely ignored it, choosing to dust bath in the loose soil near-by. So I submitted to my dh suggestion that I just tip the sand & soil under the shelter and not bother with the sand pit at all. So When I told my husband this I added so I am going to get a duck and use the sand pit as his pond. Expecting the usual long lecture, but I got a surprise, he just said well you'd better research it first! well that is what I will do. So do any of you guys know good web sites that I can find all the info on? ie: what they eat, do they lay eggs, will it stay in the compound with the chooks or will I have to seperate them, would it eat my only goldfish if I were to allow it into the proper 'small' pond I have? So many things to find out. I can't wait to get 1 ? or should I get 2 ? would I have to make I bigger pond? Ooh it's exciting. Jane & Co.
