All those unfriendly things live in Florida, but that doesn't mean that I run into them often. But in Deborah the cat's case, it would have only taken one encounter to turn her from beloved pet into cat chow. The most dangerous to her (and to chickens) would be the bald eagles, ospreys, red-tailed hawks, and other raptors that use the lake as a feeding ground. I don't expect them to stop doing that, which is why Deborah was limited to the screened-in pool deck and my future chickens will have overhead protection as well as the normal, stout, predator-proof wire fencing.
