[CHICKENS-101] Re: Chicken feed ain't cheap

This is for Jenn C,

If 75 people answer your question, you'll end up with 78 opinions. And you know what opinions are good for. I agree that with name brands you're buying marketing, etc. and generally go with the store brands myself. But one I bought coincided with a dramatic drop-off in egg production. Try whatever sells best at your local Tractor Supply, feed store, etc. and make up your own mind. I AM, however joining a growing number of people who are questioning the quality of Purina products. Their recent "limited recall" for several states probably just means those were the states they got complaints from.

After they get feathered out and go outside add green vegetable parings, table scraps, etc avoiding onions and garlic (they say they impart an "off" taste to the eggs). Avoid raw potato peelings, contain solanin a poison. Weeds you pull out of your flower beds are good along with any worms you happen across. Chickens will go mad for almost anything red. They get all the skins and seeds when I'm canning tomatoes.

Hope I haven't added to your confusion.

PS I just ordered my first incubator. The end is near!! I know I'm a goner.
