For the average hen who lays medium size brown eggs, is the egg size determined by genetics or diet or ???
I have young hens (7-8 months old) who are all laying. I got the typical tiny pullet eggs and then some consistent medium size eggs (these are Wyandotte and Auracauna). Recently though in the last week, I've been seeing small eggs again. The girls have free choice layer feed and oyster shell and free range 3/4 of the time on pasture.
So I'm wondering... are eggs a pre-determined size and the recent small eggs are coincidental. Or is there an environmental factor? (we've had some very severe thunderstorms this past week). Or these particular girls are younger than the others so eventually will catch up in egg size.
