I know last year I got quite good at thinking like a chicken! That flock left eggs *everywhere*--all sorts of nooks in the barn (especially the hayloft--including the one who hid a nest way up in the "fly" loft, down inside a bottle-shaped hole between bales, where I needed a long "grabber" tool to get the eggs out!), under stacked storm windows behind the house, beside the tire of a parked hay trailer, inside an old metal drum, under the roots of an uprooted tree... I'd hear one cackle and run to see where she was coming from. Another that laid way up in the fly loft would then launch herself from the window up in the peak of the barn. A third actually brooded and hatched three chicks up in the fly loft last May--two survived the fox invasion and are now laying, but it was quite a job getting the three chicks DOWN from the fly loft, down a ladder and all! With mama fussing at me all the way...
This year's flock--so far!--have been very good about using the nest boxes. I didn't do a thing differently, that I can think of, except that I no longer have a rooster.
