Kristen--even if it took a while for the hens to actually die, bear in mind that if they were unconscious they were not really suffering. They just went to sleep, and the sleep deepened until they were gone. Unlike humans, they didn't know what was happening.
Any decent person feels bad about having to end the life of an animal in our charge--but unnecessarily prolonging a bad situation for them (incurable or hideously painful) is far worse. I had to put one down with Marek's last year--I know I didn't deal with it as well as I should but will be better next time. So will you.
