Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Chickens pulling their feathers out

I'm to old for yahoo info ..... i even use the politically incorrect feed that oldtimers get critized incorrectly by many (saying it was the only feed they fed)(LOL) "CORN" is -has been-and will allways be the most important contributing feed in the world(no matter how many times the politically corrects say it's candy (lol) . One just has to catch on or just miss the bus every day(corn is just a small part of the diet) they can figure out the rest of the story for themselves .

The fatter my hens are - the more delicious eggs they lay year in and year out (but who knows maybe i got the wrong kind of chickens) .
I have never seen a fat hen that did not lay her heart out ......... Now if you are talking about gut fat / heart fat such as rooster can get ....... a hen that does this is through with this egg laying business-it's over with - the party is over for her - we can turn out the lights .
As we will not need anymore egg cartons for her .

Body fittness / accumulation of body fat is nature's way of turning on the egg cycle(life is good it's time to lay) it also gives them the cushion to deal with molt and other calamities .
If we withhold this type of food and continue to feed some of this el-cheap-o store bought trash called layer pellets then We Will ForEver Have These Kinds Of Problems With Our Chickens !!

Shannon, To much fat in a diet makes for fat chickens and can mess up molting. If I can get yahoo to cooperate I'll post the info. Yahoo would not let me answer your post for over an hour!

But feed sunflower seeds lightly, too much fat can mess up molts and make hens and roosters fat.

It's good stuff and you can get shelled sunflower seeds at tractor supply . A little real meat during the times of need(molting/laying/growing/brood pen/weight loss/just about anytime) will do wonders wonders for them .

This was to give them added protein which was to keep them from wanting to pull their feathers (and eating them?) . The feather pulling seems to have stopped.

That statement makes no sense. If you're buying from TSC or AgWay, the chicks are alive when you pick them up.

Black Oil Sunflower Seed (BOSS on the Internet....) is around 20% protein and has lovely oil for their skin and feathers. They love it, it is easy to find, and store.

I did this for my girls when they quit laying regularily, & were not molting or broody. The egg laying increased now I just give them dog food about twice a week. Jane & co

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Blue Cochin?

Not a black!  Maybe a standard blue (standard blue is almost black) but not true coal black. No way.  If the down has a gray cast to it, it is blue.

Splash also carries the black gene so you could end up with either.

I concur with Melissa.  If your blues have been bred to splash you can end up with either splash or blue.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] why vegan? uses for leather

and some old fashioned well pumps, they use leather ...oh heavens I forgot what they are called, but I have them in the freezer.  I think they are called leather diaphragms.  The family cabin up north has a well that uses them and I bought a stash from an elderly well man many years ago and oiled per his directions and  froze part of them in an air tight glass container.

I bought a showgirl about six months ago an I was told that by the seller that he was pretty sure it was a hen. Well it is not. He crows all the time and I live in the city and there is a daily fine if he stays. I don't know what to do. I put him on C.L and I am not having any luck. i live in Raleigh N.C.
Any advice would help
