Re: [CHICKENS-101] Ratty Hens

Each rooster has 10 hens?  Or 3 with ten hens?  I'd trim rooster toes and gently jiggle, not pull, just jiggle with a pair of pliers and take their keratin spur covers off, then put blue kote on the raw uncovered spurs, and put saddles on your girls. The saddles will also help mosquitoes off their bare backs.

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Ratty Hens

I had too many roosters and my hens, as a result, are looking pretty ratty at the moment—feathers missing from their heads and backs. Also, some are S-L-O-W-L-Y moulting, I mean for months now and some are starting to look sunburned though they spend most of their time in the shade. I've been giving them extra protein to help grow feathers and they get vitamins & electrolytes in their water. Is there anything else I should be doing?

My sister recently sent me some no-ravel fabric to make chicken saddles which I'm hoping will help protect the girls as well. I think they are goofy but am willing to give them a go if they will offer protection. Has anyone made these/used these before? Do they work? Do they last very long?

I currently have three roosters each with about 10 hens, so there is some recovery underway I just want to help it along.
