[CHICKENS-101] Re: Rooster chasing my pullet

OK, for the sake of terms, "Sexual Assault" . It's still 'rape' as far as I am concerned since the hen IS terrified and obviously upset afterwards.  We actually witnessed something awful a few days ago. We recently started seperating the young cockerals out of the one village that were being mean with the hens. If they were simply trying to climb on and were like clumbsy teen agers, and the hens weren't scared, we tried to let them work that out. Sometimes the rooster actually will learn that it's easier if the hen cooperates. But the mean ones, one by one, were seperated into another pen until we can find homes for them. Well the other day, 2 of the cockerals attacked one of the quieter ones and for all practical purposes, gang raped him! We were shocked to see these 2 roosters actually jump him and forcibly breed him. We had to yank him out of there! Now this poor guy is so traumatised, even we can't get near him.

Roosters CAN be wonderful. But they can be calculating sexual preditors too. My daughters favorite rooster, who has now turned out to be one of the "Bad" ones, will call the hens for a bug, and when they put their heads down, he nails them. Not in a nice way, either. It's a violent thing and the hens freak out. NOW the HENS have gotten wise to him and if he calls them for a bug, they usually won't come. My daughter loves this rooster so much and she's trying to work with him on being gentle with the hens, but she still has to keep him seperate. Thanks goodness chickens don't have an actual penis...they could really hurt a hen if they did.
