Thiamine and Riboflavin deficiencies in chickens often cause lameness that can mimic beginning mareks and curled toe syndrome. If caught right away before permanent damage is caused, the symptoms can be treated and the chicken saved. One odd thing about treatment is that the b complex vitamins (I buy one with all eleven b vitamins since b vitamins work together) need to be dissolved in water.
If the problem is caused by mycotoxins (this is when we wish our chickens could talk to us in English- "Honey Dear what did you eat today and where did you find it?" "Well, momma I was in the compost pit and found some luscious moldy bread and peas!") Children's vitamins with minerals ground up, with b complex ground up, mixed in water with a teaspoon of sugar, fed in drops and in their water often will have them up again with a few days to ten days. I learned this from my vet and staff at MSU. If you suspect mycotoxin posioning (which causes extra nutrition requirements) adding alfalfa leaves can help speed the offending matter from their digestive systems. I learned this hands on unfortunately.
