I don't know if they do because we just used ping pong balls and it worked for 2 different flocks.

Hi all...tried searching this site for "nest egg" and didn't find any conversation on the topic, so I'll post a question. Do wooden "nest eggs" work? I have seven hens whose "coop" is a fenced section of my barn. However, they do free range and are able to "hop the fence" (it's really more to keep the goats out of the chicken feed and discourage any predators getting in the "coop"). I have three single wooden nest boxes, a double bunny hutch (which is their favorite spot to lay), a nice pile of straw in an unused garden cart, several on-their-side plastic buckets tilted in a rack...and still, every once in awhile I'll think the girls have slacked off in their laying, only to later find a mound of a dozen or more eggs in some hidden away spot on the ground in the barn somewhere. Every day is like an Easter Egg hunt! I've decided that chickens are incredibly stupid and will insist on laying where they already see an egg, and incredibly angry that I keep stealing their eggs so they start to hide them. So I'm wondering if I keep nest eggs in each of the desired spots, are the girls likely to be fooled and lay there. Any advice will be welcome. Thanks!
