Re: [CHICKENS-101] a little rant

Your friend is bat-crap crazy.  Why some people think "being free" is better for a domestic rabbit or a chicken or a duck with special needs is completely beyond reason.  Her kids' rabbits died a brutal death by starvation or predation in very short order.  There is no arguing with a person like this.  Her beliefs are simply too different, based on completely different assumptions and values from yours.  Are your chickens healthy?  Do they scratch and dust-bathe and sunbathe and run around, do they have shade and shelter and plenty of fresh water and wholesome food?  If so, you have nothing to defend.  Tell her, "I disagree completely, I think they are perfectly happy, it's your rabbits I feel sorry for."  If she tries to argue, tell her the subject is closed and you won't discuss it anymore.  That is the only way you will be able to keep her as a friend.

Hi, I don't post often but I think I will this time.  Maybe somebody smarter than me might have an opinion. I have 12 chickens and 1 duck.  The enclosed area is about 50' by 100', the coop is about 10by 10.  They get fresh water everyday plenty of chicken food and leftovers.  A friend of mine was over today and looking at the animals.  She started telling me how sorry she felt for the chickens being kept in a cage like that.  Animals should allowed to be free not cooped up.  The duck is a rescue.  She had a mangled wing and injured foot.  The man who had her was just going to kill her and throw her away.  My daughter took her and nursed her back to health.  My friend accused me of not taking good enough care of our animals!  I should let them loose in the wild, she did that to her kids rabbits.  I was fuming.  I don't know how to defend myself or if I should even try.  But I can say I do everything I can to make sure our animals are well cared for and have plenty of room to roam.  Thanks for reading this and letting me vent.  Angela
