We have not had a good rain for a few days. It is about 96 here with
little breeze. Guess I will let the critters out and they can go into
the shed if the fireworks get to be too much for them.

Glad to hear that you got some rain. It is still extremely dry here. And to think we are less than an hour from each other. Rain goes north or south of us.

You talk about rain going north and south of you...on more than one ocassion I've watched a vary large area of rain coming our way on the radar only to have it literally split apart and go around us then come back together!  How frustrating that can be.  Yesterday it rained pretty good all around us and nothing here.  We could smell it, it was so close...but not one drop here.

That is what was happening to us for over a month. Now the humidity is unbearable. It was 104 in the shade. Forecast was for 95, yahoo said it was 99. But my and my friend's outdoor thermometers in the shade all said 104. With the humidity it is unbearable.

Dave, You usually get rain when my parents do. The storm had to have split and went right around you. It didn't rain long, there was lots of large hail, and lots of wind. Broke huge branches out of the cherry trees and others.

Dave, You had rain this morning; the winds, hail, pouring sheets of rain, lightening, and thunder woke me up. The back garage door on the main barn was left open too. Even though there is a very large awning the back of the barn is wet. Ugh! It's going to be a 100 or more today and somehow that will have to be cleaned up. The lightening is hitting very low and continuously, it was scary getting to the barn. I used a heavy blanket to protect me from the rain and hail. All of my silkies were completely freaked out.

My coop is 4*12. I have no insulation, no heat, and a 1/2 gap between the top of the wall an the roof on the 4' sides. My birds are healthy and happy.
A friend of mine had a huge coop probably 20*10, and one of the 20' side's walls only 1/3 there- meaning the wall was only 7feet long, and the rest was wide open. the birds roosted in the area that had 3 walls. Needless to say, he didn't use insulation or heat. He kept birds like that for at least 10 years. No losses to cold, but a few to predators.

I think the biggest consideration is the age and breed of your birds.

That is absolutely wonderful. That someone was so thoughtful to leave that
for you. Reminds me of when I was pregnant with my daughter. My husband was
a truck driver at the time and where he was running stone that day, he
passed what looked like four packs of diapers laying on the side of the
road. They were there all day, so at the end of the day he stopped and
picked them up and brought them home. They were newborn size and we used two
and a half packs before she outgrew them. Man was that a savings for us.
They were the jumbo packs too. My sister in law was expecting by that time
and we took the rest to her.

That's soooo nice!!!! Think its awesome when these things happen! When marcia broke her leg we where supposed to get hay that day and we where out. Our neighbor who showed up at the hospital and helped us get home. I went out when we finally got home from the hospital and the hay fairy had came and dropped a bale of hay and fed our critters. I called and told caroleen when she saw the hay fairy to thank him for me.
Isn't nice to know people like that are out there.
Jeannette

About a week ago I noticed my 4yr old BR had really watery runny poo - I kept an eye on her and she still has it - she is eating/drinking and acting fine. None of the other hens seem to have this problem.

Any suggestions

Thanks in advance
Rita

When you picked up your hen, is thin? Is her, head, comb,and/or skin pale? Is her vent clean and the feathers around her vent clean?  Can you find any mites or lice under her feathers or on her vent? No worms in her droppings? What are your temperatures?

Hello All!!
I'm new to chickens this year. I have 4 standard and 3 bantam chickens hatch end of Feb/ begining of March. On Sunday, someone laid an egg ( I think it was one of the standards, very exciting for us!! As of today, we still don't have any more eggs. Is this normal for one of the girls to do? I'm learning as we go!!

Thank you,
Sue in CT

Sometimes they skip a day or lay small eggs when they are just beginning to lay.  Make sure they have plenty of fresh, cool water in this hot weather.  How exciting.   I am waiting for my spring hatch to start laying.   SUsan

Hi I have been a member for this year and at last I can post a message. This week my hens on loan arrived with their dog safe coop and gear. I was very excited for a month after I booked them but very concerned on the day they came.We had a lot of rain and the girls were reluctant to surface!
We have since had sunny winter days and the girls are out and about, eating and drinking. Phew!
As I have Bird flushing dogs I have not had chooks out, with out dogs in side.this is okay but today I have a chook garden cage that lets the girls sit in the sun and relax with out my two dogs rounding them up.
so far so good.
The rental coop is a really heavy strong coop that cannot be knocked over.It is easy to clean and safe from Predators. The girls take them self to bed early and are up early the next day .
So far, it is working out. The girls are cute pekin Bantams,Millie and Maisie.
Stay tune,
Jennie ,Melbourne,Australi a
