So.
I thought I'd introduce myself since I have already used you guys for advice.
I am (yet another) Laura, I live in the mountains of Virginia and I am brand spanking new to Chickens. But I am already enthralled. My little flock is about 2 months old. I am still working on their coop. It was fun designing it and building it. It was intended on being a rolling coop for half a dozen chickens but it kept getting bigger and bigger as I realized 6 wasn't going to be enough. And now I am not sure that when I put the wheels on I will be able to budge it, LOL. But I just installed the poop trays yesterday, so maybe it won't be too bad if I can keep those clean.
We put the coop inside the goat enclosure, hoping the goats would help defend the chickens. But so far we have had to defend the chickens against the goats stealing their feed! The friggin goats have figured out how to wedge themselves into a 10x14 chicken door! Rascals. I now have the chicken door only raising ½ way and that seems to be doing the trick. I guess the chickens will have to learn to duck.
But at least they are getting along fine. The chickens even pick the hayseeds off of the goats. (angora goats, so plenty of hayseeds stuck in there)
And to my amazement, even the dogs seem to be leaving the chickens alone
although I am not letting them into the goat pen, but occasionally a chicken is venturing through the fence to my chagrin.
I have Silver-grey Dorkings and Welsummers. I want a couple of Marans or Barnvelders and a couple Ameracaunas, but doubt that is going to happen this year, now. The two Barnvelders and two Marans I got ended up all being male. I was able to get rid of two of them, but may have to give the others to a friend for processing if they end up not getting along. The maran has started to crow already, but I am still in denial about the remaining Barnvelder. Maybe he/she could be a masculine hen
LOL. Yeah, right.
And you already know about my adventure with the sick Ameracauna. I ended up taking her back. And am watching my flock nervously, hoping they haven't caught whatever she had.
Live and learn.
Always looking for advice, as I am so new at all this.
Laura
