I hate it when people say stuff like that.
Don't let her get to you, you are doing a great job by keeping them protected and well cared for.
Maybe you should let her know that letting them roam free can be very bad for chickens. They can become injured or killed by predators. That would be more inhumane than caging them.
When we first started raising chickens, we let them free range. We quickly discovered, after losing a large part of our flock to opossums, dogs, cats and other predators, that in our area, free ranging was not a good idea. We built a very large, predator proof enclosure for our chickens.
We have been raising chickens for over 25 years and our chickens are healthy, and what I like to think happy, in their enclosure.
Sometimes, these "bleeding hearts" are more harmful to animals than they are helpful. While I agree with treating all animals humanely, I hate seeing people trying to change things for the "better" of the animal when they don't know what they are doing and only end up harming them more.
The thing is, most animals in today's society, are domesticated. They cannot survive in the wild like did hundreds of years ago. Trying to make them conform to roaming free is just as cruel as some of these big poultry farms caging chickens in tiny spaces, with a life of never seeing daylight.
