[CHICKENS-101] re: a little rant

Angela,

What a naive friend you have! Chickens are relatively easy pickings
for all manner of predators. I live on a ranch and let my chickens free
range, but it only works because they stay close to the house and are by
default protected by the LGDs (Livestock Guardian Dogs) I have for the goat
herd. Even still, I loose one every once in a while to something. Unless
you have a protected area for them to free range in like I do, and LGDs to
protect them, "setting them free" would be like you taking your friend and
setting her "free" in the worst parts of Chicago and expecting her to be
just fine and perfectly happy. Plus your enclosed area is plenty big for 12
chickens and a duck as long as they have food, water and shade.

Hi, I don't post often but I think I will this time.  Maybe somebody smarter
than me might have an opinion. I have 12 chickens and 1 duck.  The enclosed
area is about 50' by 100', the coop is about 10by 10.  They get fresh water
everyday plenty of chicken food and leftovers.  A friend of mine was over
today and looking at the animals.  She started telling me how sorry she felt
for the chickens being kept in a cage like that.  Animals should allowed to
be free not cooped up.  The duck is a rescue.  She had a mangled wing and
injured foot.  The man who had her was just going to kill her and throw her
away.  My daughter took her and nursed her back to health.  My friend
accused me of not taking good enough care of our animals!  I should let them
loose in the wild, she did that to her kids rabbits.  I was fuming.  I don't
know how to defend myself or if I should even try.  But I can say I do
everything I can to make sure our animals are well
cared for and have plenty of room to roam.  Thanks for reading this and
letting me vent.  Angela
