Re: [CHICKENS-101] Hello-broody question

I have no suggestions about the geese, but if you do not want the hens to hatch eggs, simply check the nests daily and remove any eggs that are there. They may continue to set for a few weeks, but will eventually give up. Any eggs that are in the nest for less than a day could be considered "fresh" and eaten. These eggs will have been layed by other hens if the two broody hens are truly broody. Any older eggs should be discarded.

Hello,

I hope everyone is have a great Friday evening.  I have a couple of questions....

1) two of my 6 month old speckled sussex hens have gone broody on me.  They are both setting on nest(in very weird spots in the barn) and won't get off.  One of them has hatched three chicks...two died:(.  I brought third one in the house and have it under a heat lamp with food and water.  I really do not need baby chicks at this time with winter coming and all.  I am in NH.  It has been unusually warm here but will turn cold soon.  What would you all do?

2) we would like to add a few geese to the farm.  any tips, ideas, or suggestions?  From my research, I really like the pilgrim so far.  Will I have to wait till Spring to get them?  I have been looking at craigslist and such but so far no luck.  We have 6 ducks and 15 hens and 1 rooster.

Thanks in advance.

[CHICKENS-101] Re: araucanas

My Araucana hens lay eggs in various shades of blue, I don't think any two are the same. Upon cracking the Araucana egg the interior of the shell should be blue as well, otherwise the egg is not coming from a well bred and/or "true" Araucana hen.

My girls layed a pale turquoise to pale mint colored egg. Now I just have an olive egger left, and some young sex yet to be determined olive eggers. Guess I need to get some more this spring.
I love the green and bluish eggs.

I have seen from a just barely there blue tint to almost bright blue and everything in between.  Green can be from olive green to grass green.  I have also seen some eggs that look pink.    Susan

Re: [CHICKENS-101] missing top beak.

Is he eating and drinking?  Any rough edges?  If there are rough edges you can smooth them off with and emery board.  I have a hen that has a pretty severe crossed beak and she eats and drinks and lays and seeme to enjoy life.  I guess it depends on how much care you want to put into an injured chick.  Susan

I have a little silkie that was attacked by a dog. We did not notice that the beak was damaged, as he was just roughrd up, so we thought no damage done. Yesterday we picked him up to find most of his top beak missing. Willl he be ok like this?

Hubs came in about 1 pm today from picking up remnants, he had his Catahoula Jake with him, and as soon as he pulled up to the barn Jake bale out of the pickup. He tied up with this guy. Only mere feet from my chicken house. Not a huge bodied dude, but big enough tusks. Jake is cut, but nothing that will require stiches, just a little bloody. So it's appearing they are starting to loose fear of us (cause I was out there not 10 minutes before giving the chickens some scraps), and coming out whenever they are wanting to. And my little stud Cisco and one of my mares was also turned out in the orchard, they never even raised their heads at even the shooting. lol I'm just hoping that this was the fence killer and we won't have to keep patching on it after this.
