In many third world countries the chickens live with the family. They are used for meat, eggs, and pets. Silkies have been around since ancient times and have their own unique personalities whether they are show or hatchery. I like my silkies fluffier than hatchery silkies. One year I bought over 400 silkies from Ideal for breeding. I wanted the penciling from the partridge and was looking for another line of reds. I kept 7 out of all the silkies for breeding to mine. The rest I butchered, sold to the Asian market, and people locally. To me it was well worth the cost and work to get what I needed. Cathryn
